Giving up gluten has been no easy task and I am ashamed to admit that I cheated. For 5 solid days I was able to avoid my glutenous cravings, but once the weekend approached I really let my willpower fall to the wayside. It all started when I allowed myself have a slice of pizza (and immediately regretted it) but the moment I let myself cheat, I gave up completely! That one slice of pizza was just the start of a few gluten heavy meals this weekend. And now, I am 100% disappointed with myself.
Changing ones eating habits is no easy task, especially with the holidays fast approaching. So, I have adjusted some of my commitments and am truly hoping to stick to it this time. In one week, I am participating in an annual Friendsgiving with my girlfriends from college and have offered to bring a variety of dishes. I am vowing to make my dishes gluten free and will be posting whatever recipes I take on. My goal is to not eat gluten until next Saturday, when my taste buds will be tantalized with biscuits and baked goods, and even then I want to eat them sparingly. I will also try to avoid gluten until actual Thanksgiving Day when I will be at the hands of the very same foods. After this fall holiday, it is my responsibility to truly take on gluten free living without succumbing to a bowl of hot pasta.
A few tips I have for diet change so far…
- Baby steps: Don’t take on too much too soon. It is hard to radically change over night, so its okay to feel a bit guilty now and then… as long as it doesn’t become habit.
- Keep a Food Diary: Keeping track of what you are eating is a success tool for any healthy eater. With an elimination diet, like mine, it is good to keep a written diary of what is eaten and how you feel after (if you cheat). Being reminded not just of your mental state (ie: my “failure” woes), but your physical state (I feel noticeably lethargic after my gluten-filled weekend), is great to reflect on at other moments of weakness.
- When in Doubt, Google!: If you aren’t sure whether the ingredient you are trying to avoid is in something you are looking to eat, Google it. You will be happy you did!
